The Dance.

A gothic building, rather massive, more-than-rather famous. Also with a tendency to be expensive.
However, most of all, safe.

While within The Dance, one was in a political sanctuary, where no harsh acts could be fulfilled. Poison was not an option, assassins wouldn't be able to blend in, and armed attacks could be intercepted by the conveniently close-located MP barracks. Of course, an enemy such as the Red Titan wouldn't care about those, but he was a token exception.
After all, he was the only being of such power.

So this had quickly became Auth's favourite spot for making and keeping up relations to people. The fact his aunt ran the entire enterprise also helped, of course, but wasn't a critical factor. Anywhere where you could reliably talk with someone relatively one-on-one (courtesy of the generous space between tables, intentionally suited for this exact purpose) while unafraid of having the guy try to murder you, directly or otherwise, was a pretty great spot.
Most of the Walls' upper class thought the same, which is why this place could allow itself to so comfortably exist.

Right now, Auth was retying old connections. He had sent Cora Wolf a letter asking her to meet him, and sure enough she was here now, bound to enter the restaurant at any point. He hoped she was dressed in a half proper manner, otherwise Al-Sanya wouldn't let her in. And really, if Al-Sanya got to try and force her into wardrobe, it would be a dress she picks. That could get real fun. Augh sighed.

Cora...
He hadn't seen her in a long while, and even now he really called her because he needed her services. He felt somewhat bad about it, since she was his friend after all, and that's now how one should treat his friends. In his defence, she was out there most of the time, while he was tied hands and feet in here, the middle of this damn prison. He somewhat envied her, but it wasn't his place to think bad of people just because they had more momentary freedom than him. He had made this sacrifice willingly, and he wasn't going to go back on it.

Besides, the problem at hand would require her skills, and would likely make her happy too. It was also a chance to make up for his lack of interaction. Stealing sensitive documents from rival lords had that sort of nice effect on social relations.

I mean, it has been a while since he and her went into something like this together.

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

Post by cornix 26/4/2018, 21:38

A few days, almost a week ago Cora had recieved a letter from a rather well known personality. He did not sign it in any way, but from the handwriting and the hints, she was pretty sure whom she would meet.
She was quite happy when she read the first part of the letter until it got to the 'dress fancy' part. 'Dress fancy'?! She was always dressed fancy in her opinion. What was not fancy about simple black pants and a simple red or black shirt? Cora just shook her head at it but decided she should probably go by what he said. It was simpler this way and it would also hopefully get her into 'the dance'. As odd as it was but she had never been their personally. Usually her clients preferred to meet somewhere less well known and less well visited by the general political public. Hiring guards could after all mean you wanted to do something! Or that you had done something and you were now fearing for your life!
She really was not too much of a fan of all these political games. Yes, they were entertaining to Nec....but really not to her. Rather boring in her opinion. Really. This one does this, that one assumes that about this one...that one does that in return which makes this one assume something else...bahbahbah.
Boring.

She had searched out something 'rather' fancy. Black boots, black tight leather pants and a white buttoned up shirt. She had even found a tie and a jacket somewhere. The tie was a beautiful blood red, in Vex's opinion and she should wear it more. Her hair was braided to look a bit less agressive and more elegant. Atleast that's what one of her Betas recommended, she really was not sure if it actually would work. Cora sighed before she went on her way to the restaurant. This was going to be fun. Mostly just getting in. Actually seeing Auth actually WOULD be fun.

Cora looked at the entrance from a bit further away as if she was infiltrating it. Only Nec managed to kick her out of her suspicions towards the building and what it brought with it. Poison. Apparently. She took a deep breath and went towards the entrance.
"Cora Wolf. Is the name.", she said calmly to the man guarding the place.
"I should be on the list."

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

As Cora approached the entrance, the guard's head perked up. As she said her name, he lifted an eyebrow. He held pride in his ability to remember each invited guest by heart, without having to look at the actual list, and had no memory of this woman. Still, she looked decided enough, so he sighed and looked anyway.

Obviously, he was entirely correct, there was no Cora Wolf on the list.
Nevermind the fact she was a rather known mercenary leader, at least among those employed in his business. She didn't look like one at first glance, but once you knew who she was, it quickly became obvious from her stance and demeanor. Maybe it wouldn't be that smart to disallow her.
Sigh. Rules were rules though.

"I'm sorry, but no, there is no Cora Wolf on the list, nor anything related to the last name of Wolf. Nor Cora, for that matter." He leaned slightly back, letting the list down. His hand was in very close proximity to his Kanabo behind him, just in case. "Unfortunately, I cannot let you in."

At about the same time as he ended his words, and much before Cora could answer, a woman's head with short, really red hair popped out of the main door. "Oh nononono she's going in." She exited fully, took Cora by the hand, and quickly entered the building with her, leaving the guard dumbstruck. Once inside, she continued, just as quickly. "Nice to meet you, I'm Al-Sanya, and you lovely she-wolf are Cora." Once again, word after word in rapid fire.

"See my dear, you're here covertly, so your name isn't Cora right now. You're Harma, daughter of rich merchant based in spice trading in Krolva. Not that such a thing exists, but you get the idea" She took a step back and eyed her top to bottom. "Nice attire, by the way. You'd look way prettier in a dress, though. I've got some in the back if you..." She took a very slight pause. "...nevermind. Forgot about the scars. Anyway don't let me keep you, you go right in."

She motioned towards the door at the end of a short hallway. "Auth's in the far corner, you'll see him. See you around later, dearie!"

****

In the meantime, Auth was playing with his wine. It was obviously poisoned, and he had just poured the neutralizing agent in it. Now he was stirring it so it can have its effect.

Cora should be here any moment now.

Cora was a bit surprised at her not being on the list. Did he forget about her? Unlikely, it was Auth. He tended to remember important stuff.
She almost wanted to say something to the guard as a woman exited and more or less pulled her inside.
'She- wolf', eh? What an odd nickname. It's not like there were only male wolves in nature or something. Vex got kind of angry at her even bring a dress into discussion in the first place, while Nec was just happy that they had dressed fancy enough to be let in. Without having to change into something...dress-y. All three of them despised dresses. They only put them on if they really had to.
"Harma. Duaghter. Merchant. What.", she just managed to say at the woman's quick talking. "Okay."
How did she know about the scars? Who was she? Did she know her? Maybe she just did not with all the makeup she was wearing. She was just a bit confused at the general situation. Was she Auth's mom? She looked similar to him in some way.
Only now Nec pulled her out of her confusion and told her that it was most likely his aunt, given she was the one that owned the restaurant.

Cora just mumbled a 'thank you' and then went inside. She did not really give the immenseness fo the room in front of her any mind. She was way too focused on the odd people within it. Mostly politicians. She recognized a few and hoped they did not recognize her.
One of them happily waved and was about to shout something but immediatly stopped when Cora ran her finger of her throat to signal him to not make a fuss out of this.
She came closer to him and shook his hand. He was with his wife and noone else. That was certainly better.
"Hello...Miss W-. Alright. I will be quiet!"
"It's fine, not even I knew that I wasn't supposed to come here without my real name. It's not like people could not recognize me.", she smiled.
He was one of her better clients. A long time pack-fan that had hired them for years. He was already fond of their mercenary work when Cora was only 'surprise adopted' into the pack.
His humour was great and he was noone that tried to hide that he was hiring any mercenaries.
"Are they behaving well?", she then asked, "Otherwise I will pay you and them a visit and lecture them a bit about what they should do and what they should not.", she grinned widely.
"No! No! They are doing fine! You really gave me quite good guards! They even laugh at my jokes!"
Cora laughed. Mostly because she felt like she had to. Good thing her own guards knew when to laugh at their superior's jokes as well.
"Alright, I shall take my leave them. Have a lovely evening!"
She smiled one last time and went towards the corner. She could see Auth from quite far away, it's not like his stature, behaviour or anything else in that regard was anyhow...not..recognizable.
Cora simply sat down next to him. He was friend enough to be able to refrain from formal greetings.
"Good day to you, Mister...Vi...Rauco.", she slowly remembered his name, out of some reason she was not sure anymore if he was called that way. He sometimes tended to introduce himself different and it had managed to confuse her as well.
Cora grinned at him.

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

Post by Herdir 27/4/2018, 12:18

Auth silently observed Cora go in. She seemed to have taken his advice and did dress fancy. By the fact it was not a dress, though, he assumed Al-Sanya had been satisfied with her looks as well. Yes, Cora was covered in scars from the neck down, and a dress would most likely expose all that, but Al-Sanya wasn't someone to give in easily. In all honesty, Auth would have been unsurprised if Cora would've walked in wearing a dress that somehow concealed all of her, and shambling about in some form of poison-induced half-conscience that she was put in so the dress can be forced on her.

Now, she stopped midway at a minor noble's table. This was odd, especially given that the noble was the one who approached her first. He wanted to shout, the idiot. Auth made a mental note about his table. Now the two were talking. He had told Cora to come mildly undercover, which would really have assumed she would not try to be the mercenary leader of the pack, and she did seem like she was doing a half-decent job. He would've told her to come in full disguise, but that would've been pretty pointless. People around here could be split in three categories: those that did not know who she was, who wouldn't be a problem; those who did know who she was, and would have known her presence regardless of the disguise thanks to information networks; and finally, the third kind that just revealed itself: those that were both knowing her and too dumb to pretend not to.

She exchanged some quick words, then headed over to him. She sat down, and wished him a good day. He smiled.

"Miss Alpha Wolf, always a pleasure" His voice was low enough it wouldn't be heard from other tables. The spaces inbetween them were oddly large, and it was for this express purpose of being able to talk without being eavesdropped that easily. "I see you've got friends in high places apart from me." He sipped his wine slowly. "And, how bad did it go with Al-Sanya? You're still all well and healthy, mind and body?"

In the meantime, a waiter stopped for a moment to leave two menus on the table. Auth opened it, looking at the inner cover page for a second. A rich green environment was depicted, full of fruits and flowers, as well as some of the tools one would usually see in winemaking. It was very similar to what a lot of other restaurants around had as inner cover if the took pride in their wine, except one detail: this one had no grapes visible. Those who knew, it was a list of all the ingredients acceptable in poison for the sport of The Dance. Those who didn't, usually didn't even notice the cover.
He flipped a few more pages, so it wouldn't stand out he didn't actually want to order anything, then closed it.

"Feel free to get yourself anything, drink or food. It's on me tonight."

Post by cornix 28/4/2018, 22:18

Cora leaned back on the bench and grinned at Auth.
"I am all well, mind, body, etcetera etcetera. She was quite happy with the way I dressed! Or well dress.", her grin just go wider and she leaned in, "Which means I won't have to be in a dress!"
She was unbelievably happy at that. Cora despised dresses and even more so her other two personalities.
"Yes I do know a few...he is not really one of the discreet ones though. Long time hirer of the pack."

Cora just nodded at his offer that he would pay for everything and took the menu. She had never really gone to any fancy restaurants. She had been there sometimes, just as a guard though or to introduce some of her guards on how to behave. In which case she had still just accompanied someone.
She flipped through the menu and got stuck right at the first page. The drawings were really pretty and Cora slowly ran over them with her finger.
"I wish I could draw like that...", she said quietly. The wine making tools reminded her of makeshift torture devices. Given that this was a restaurant that focused on poison though...unlikely she would get to see any of those today.
Nec wanted to make a comment about it but Cora quickly shut him up inside her head. He could think of this later. She herself was not interested. Atleast not right now.
Cora slowly looked through the menu, slower than most people would take for certain.
"Alright. I will be really boring. I shall just drink water and have some...uhm...noodles.", she said. "To be fully honest with you Authy, I have never ate at a high class...or even middle class restaurant.", she smiled awkwardly.
"About the food being on you. It's more on your aunt, is it not?"

Cora smiled at him, closed the menu and ordered when the waiter came over again. This would be an interesting meal. Esspecially for Vex who was determined to have the right smell in this. He considered himself a real wolf since Nec had read a book to him the other night about canines...and was now convinced he could smell any ingridient. He was also determined to proove it and neither Nec or Cora were looking forward to him playing guessing games in their head without being able to shut him up.

Accordingly to Cora, Sangwa did not insist overmuch on the attire of the mercenary. However...

"If you need to mention dresses, that shows Sangwa did affect you" He chuckled.

Then, mercenaries. It was interesting to know there were some dealing with the pack aside from him. Long timer client, it kind of made sense. Probably from the days since the pack was less... military-related, and probably not able to break the ties properly. Or even smart enough to think of it. Oh well. Cora benefited from it, so all was well.

As he was playing around in his mind as to what to order the funny man, Cora was in awe at the drawings. I mean, it made sense. The Dance did indeed knock itself out with those menus, just like everything else in the building. And, of course, as she just admitted, Cora wasn't used to this kind of enterprise. Made sense, given her background. He chuckled again at her saying the food is on his aunt.

"Come on, do you really think I'm that poor?!" He was, in fact, paying to eat here. If even just to blend in among those very few that didn't know of his relation with the owner. "I thought you had a better impression of me!" Auth acted insulted in a deliberately bad manner, enough to make the joke obvious. He hoped.

"Now..." The waiter approached. Auth shut up. Yes, the people here were trustworthy. No, being overly careful couldn't hurt. Besides, as the waiter took Cora's order, he then turned to him.

"And you, sir?"
"Oh, I'm quite fine. I'd like a glass of Exotic Vine, though." As he was saying this, his finger was lingering on the back cover of the menu. The 'abstract artwork' on it was in fact a very stylized map of the restaurant.
"Oh, I'm afraid we're out of it, sir. Very popular these days" Code phrase for 'Yeah I'll poison the poor guy'.
"Ah, no matter. It's all right as it is then"

The waiter bowed slightly then left. Auth turned back to Cora.

"Okay, with that done, how have you been? Heard you were on a mission with Alan some time ago. All well...?" Auth had heard nothing from Mitsuo, but he did know he took part in the mission too. It was crazy, how quickly word got around the nobility. What contacts did for people was amazing.
He slightly leaned forward and lowered his voice. "More importantly, how is your current mission situation? Anything you have to personally be present for in the near future?"

Laying down the groundwork. The snake den in upper society taught you to never say what precisely you wanted until you got confirmation the question is absolutely worth asking. After all, every bit of information you said could be later used against you, so sticking to the bare minimum was a requirement. Auth wasn't the ace at it some of the elders were, but he caught on to the game rules rather fast.
Which, in a way, wasn't good. Meant he'd be seen as a possible threat earlier.

Cora did not answer anything to him asking him if she thought he was that poor. She just looked at the ceiling and rolled her eyes.
While Cora was thinking about all sorts of things she saw in the restaurant and not really caring for most what she saw...she was mostly impressed by the architecture and the people that were dining here, Nec was staying alert.

Nec noticed how Auth ordered 'exotic wine'. How odd was that?! 'Exotic Wine'?! That made no sense. If you actually wanted to order wine you would specify which one, the region. Not...the genral one. That would be similar to ordering 'Wall Maria wine'...you would order 'Shiganshina wine' Or something, not just...
He got quite upset about it before he realized he might mean something else with it. He then in turn got more upset because he did not realize it immediatly. He wanted to punch himself for staying 'alert' and not noticing certain things immediatly.
So. What did 'exotic wine' mean? Certainly wine with something exotic added. Which could be...poison of all sorts, certainly not a common one.
The Waiter's answer 'very popular these days' most certainly meant that alot of people were using it. If he was actually going to...Oh. Nec mentally facepalmed. Of course. He did not order the goddamn wine for himself, he ordered it for someone else. That's why the waiter saying 'out of it' made sense. So Auth would not have to drink his own poison.
Vex listened to the whole conversation, he did not understand much but he was pretty sure Nec was angry at himself.
Time to make this worse.

Pf. You are slow. Did you already get poisoned? It was so goddamn obvious.

Nec just wished he could actually strangle him right now. Hurting Cora would not do much, Vex would probably enjoy it and ramming a knife into her own thighs right now...was not the best to do at a public place.

In the meantime Cora talked with Auth.
"My mission with Alan.", her voice got deeper, showing her own anger and frustration at the outcome, "that was the reason I was more or less out for two to three weeks. I don't remember. Was it four? Three?", she looked at the ceiling, trying to recall it, "No, I am not sure. Whatever."
She looked around the restaurant, giving herself some time before she answered.
"Not too well to be honest."
She decided to stay brief, no need to tell him more. Esspecially not him, who knew how much he would talk with others.
"About any future missions...as far as I know I am not booked for the near future."
Nec got upset at this statement and mumbled something Cora could not really understand in her own head either. Vex however could and bursted out into laughter.
Cora angrily bit her own tongue before continuing.
"I am quite free, there have not been any men that wanted me."

Oh for fuck's sake, Cora. You are doing this on purpose.
Nec was rather embarassed, Cora pretended that that was her intention in the first place.
Cora grinned at Auth and leaned in.
"So. I am all free."

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

Post by Herdir 4/5/2018, 11:19

Auth listened to Cora avoid detailing the mission. What she did give him was troubling: One, Cora herself was out for a number of weeks, which said quite a bit about the level of physical danger involved. Two... she said it didn't go well. But after talking about the wounds, so the two weren't related in her head. He had to ask Alan about all this when he'd get the change, or maybe Mitsuo. Something was off, very off here.

Regardless, that was a story for another time. Much more importantly, Cora was free. As she herself put it, there weren't any men that wanted her. Auth could bet on the contrary, but the men that did want her probably didn't want to either admit it or just lacked the guts. With Cora leaned in like this, their faces were not all that far apart. He considered making a joke about her trying to kiss him, but she had given him much better leads to have fun with. He grinned.

"Well, then you shouldn't mind me taking you for a round" For likely the first time ever, he noticed she was, in fact, a woman. And quite a beautiful one, too, if you wouldn't mind scars. Which Auth didn't. "We'll have lots of fun, I'm sure. I'll pay, of course."

He leaned back. Knowing her, she wouldn't say no to his proposal, given she was perfectly able to take it.

"Long story short, there's a nobleman that has been using some shady group to... eliminate... competition." He glanced quickly around. "Generally, that's a bad idea, but whomever he hired are doing their job flawlessly. They are untraceable, and really, if it weren't for the lord not being the most capable of keeping things hidden, nobody would've even known it was him." He sipped his wine for a second. The neutralizing agent had fully countered the poison in it by now. "So obviously this thing is a threat, and we have to get to the bottom of it. Luckily, the lord is throwing a party soon." As if. These sorts of parties, especially in his case, were shows of strength. It was a context to invite especially your enemies so you can duel them in words, or catch them red-handed as they try to do various harm around your household. Adar's Masquerade a while ago had been no different. "And, from certain sources, I know he'll be having a document linking him to the group of assassins somewhere in his house around that time. It's more than likely it's a boast." Truth. Putting that sort of sensitive information out in the open was a way to prove your security, and deter future attempts at illicit action.

"So, the first stage of our job is simple: infiltrate the party, steal the document, get out. I'll let you ask the questions now, since there are likely things you're interested in before we call it a plan. Also, name a price. I need you personally, and preferably you alone from the Pack."

Auth was well prepared to pay. Managing this would be a show of strength from his side too, and possibly Cora, if she desired it to be known it was the Pack that helped thwart that unsavory fellow. The fact the Pack did not take on assassinations would've assured they are not targeted in themselves. After all, they were skillful mercenaries, not criminals.

In the meantime, the waiter passed by and brought Cora her noodles and water. Auth almost pointed out the four pastas in her food that were poisoned, which could be seen by the slight shade glinting in the lamplight at the very ends of them. In the end, he decided not to. She could probably take care of herself on that, and if not, this would've been a good lesson, in a controlled environment.

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

Post by cornix 4/5/2018, 20:03

Cora quietly listened to Auth, the proposal sounded quite good. Go in. Retrieve document. Get paid. Sounded great!
Esspecially given that she really wanted to go on a mission again. Those past weeks of her basically being a stay-at-home-Mercenary were everything but for her. She did not like decided too many things for herself. She had not really been thaught that by anyone...and it was hard. Nec was mostly doing the work and it got both her and Vex rather bored from time to time.
How could Auth enjoy these political games this much? And how could Renn enjoy them? And Nec? Why were there so many people in her life enjoying these games? She was caught right in between them! And she did not like it!
Beating someone up was much easier than...politically...doing...things.

"First things first: Why me personally? I have some other people that are very good as well for this job...well...", she looked up,"You know. Maybe not as good as I am. But they would be fit."
Cora grinned.
"Now, lemme ask all my questions before you answer each of them so I don't forget any in the meantime. I suppose the whole infiltration might be quite fun. It's a party, right?", she made a 'mhhhh' sound, "I suppose it makes sense why you would only want me. Shall I just show up as your bodyguard?"
Before he could answer anything she also added a: "By the way: I get paid by the hour/day and the general danger. I can make a better price for you though. You count as a friend after all!", she smirked then looked down at her noodles and her grin only got wider.
Cora giggled quietly, "Foooooood!", she said happily and took fork and knife in her hands.
She wanted to eat some but her movements were stopped right before she could do anything. It looked as if an invisible force had just canceled her actions. In reality it was simply Nec.

Idiot. Watch out. Primary Idiot...do your thing. If you can. I doubt it but...try.
Nec really was not sure if Vex 'reading' that book about canines had done any effects, but if one thing was sure then it was the fact that he was the most primal out of all of them. His senses had always been better, he had no idea how to use them...which made it quite useless but it was worth a shot, right?

Vex was unbelievably happy and layed the knife and fork on the table. Nec forced him to take them in his hand again, they did not want to eat like canines after all. Vex insisted that it would make his sense of smell worse but was quickly convinced otherwise by both Nec and Cora telling him he would do it this way or not at all.
They should after all not let everyone know that she was a madman.
Vex sighed and carefully poked one of the tortellini. He managed to get a bit of the insides on his fork and licked it off.
It did not taste bitter in any way, he had read, or well Nec had read to him, that bitterness was a usual indication of poison.
Nec reminded him that the taste might not be the only way to indicate if something was poisoned or not before going back to thinking about something else.
Vex took a look at the noodle. It looked normal. Like...most of the others. There were a few that did not...really look like the others, but it might just be the light. Before he would ask Nec about it though he would figure it out himself.

No risk no fun.
Oh no.
Oh no.

Vex ate half of his 'safe' tortellini. All of them enjoyed it. Good. No poisoning. No dying. Victory was achieved in his eyes.
He continued to poke other noodles and compared the slight bit of taste to the first one. He ate another two or three before he thought that the taste was slightly different to the others, so he let that one for the end.

"So. Authy.", Vex giggled, "Renn does not like getting called like that.", Cora took over, "I am sorry, you were not to witness this. What I wanted to say was: I don't think I am interested in much more apart from: Who else will join us?"

Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix) Empty Re: Wolves and Men, Part I (closed: Herdir, cornix)

Auth listened to Cora lay out the questions, then munch into her food carefully. A good attitude, but let's see how good she actually was at spotting the thing. As far as Auth knew, that glint was how to identify that type of poison, but he had no idea if there were or weren't other tells. Anyhow, onto Cora's questions.

"First of all, I trust you. I do not, however, trust most of your pack. And I don't believe in trust-by-proxy, which is to say I should trust them because you do." He took a sip of wine. "Besides, I need the best of the best for this, can't afford a failure in it this early in the game." Early in the game being Auth's recent joining of the political scene in full. What he accomplished now would be what makes or breaks the opinion of other nobles of him, and it was also why he could be almost certain he'd be alone in trying to steal the documents. Once his intent had been clear, the others gave him freeway, wanting to observe what the new player could do and what pawns he could move.

"Secondly, coming with a bodyguard to something like that would be both really unsubtle, and rude towards the host. It would imply his guards are incompetent." Which they were not, as Auth knew. That was a problem for them. "Since I'm not married, I'm allowed to bring one other person with me to the party. You can guess what sort of person they'd expect." Still, he wouldn't let Cora guess. He was afraid of what weird conclusion she might reach. "You're there to pose as my current lover. It will also allow you to abuse the power of cosmetics to make yourself unrecognizable. All you have to do is hold my hand and look pretty, and everyone will ignore you, thus allowing you to do all sorts of stuff"

He did not, however, consider he may have to get her in a dress. That unpleasant surprise would hit him later.

In the meantime, he noticed Cora referring to him as Authy. Which he obviously didn't mind. Then talk about someone named Renn. Which was troubling, because for one thing, he had to be important to her, if he just sprang up to mind like that, and for another thing, what sorta boring arse would actually react to being called 'Renny' or something. Auth made a mental note of yet another dude he had to watch out for, the list lengthening by the passing day. He did, however, not bring the topic of conversation to that.

"As for other people, I'm keeping to the bare minimum needed: You, to steal the actual documents. Me, to keep the noble busy and on his tiptoes the whole time. A Garrison Captain by the name of Sevyne, invited as a representative for the respective branch, there to create an opening for you to be able to sneak in. An unimportant, unnoticeable, Scout by the name of René, there to pick up the documents while you rejoin the party, so that there's no suspicion on us."

He leaned back. He truly hoped she'd agree to joining, but was also pretty sure she would.

"So, you're in?"

Cora stopped munching on her noodles the moment he said something along the lines of 'lover'.
She stared at him, her head still being over her plate. She let him finish his 'speech' before finally managing to say something.
"Ekschuse me.", she said with a full mouth and gulped it down before she continued to talk, "I heard you say... 'lover'?"
She sat upright again and wiped away some of the butter on her lips with a tissue.
"You surely don't mean that.", she laughed nervously, "Me? Loving? Lover? What. No. I don't know how that works."
Her face showed utter confusion.
"Listen. I am a trained bodyguard, I do not know how to use makeup but I can put some pretty decent war paint on if I must. I also don't know how to look pretty, I know how to look intimidating. I don't know how to hold hands, I know how to crush them. In short! I am a wolf! Not a sheep!", she took a deep breath.
"Okay, I am finished. Let's just put it like this: I doubt I will be able to make a decent 'lover' for more than half a minute at a time before I do something dumb that normal people don't do. I am not sure if I am fit for this job."
She hated being honest about jobs and esspecially about her limitations, but she had to be. This was not really fit for her.
"I am more man than most of the nobles that will show up to that party! How do you expect me to play a woman?!"
Vex had a marvelous idea and was not afraid to say it.
"How about we dress YOU up as the woman? Your hair is long enough, you have the curves and I am pretty sure in a dress we won't have problems hiding certain parts. We can use some apples to make you seem more female as well."
Cora quickly put a hand over her mouth, "Don't get annoyed by him. So....to make it...less complicated: I am not sure if I am fit for this job. You might have to get someone else. You said there was a garrison woman? Get her as your lover, I pretend to be garrison. Or get the man...I think I know Rene...redhead...right? Went on a mission with him. Get everyone to be a woman but me!"

Auth almost laughed at her predicament, but unfortunately he was dead serious about it. Her coming under the guise of his lover would have been the best way to make her able to sneak in and out unnoticed, and it wouldn't be a hard part to play, either.

He sighed.

"Look, Cora, I'm perfectly aware you don't like the idea, but listen: I have to go as myself, can't disguise as a woman. The garrison woman is also invited personally, and I doubt you can disguise yourself as being more than a head shorter. The redhead, if he comes, you'd get his part, which is to stay out and wait, thus you can't steal anything!" Was it the best idea to put Cora in a dress and trying to look pretty? Not really. Was it the best option currently? Unfortunately, yes.

"You're a wolf, of course. I don't need a sheep for this mission. However, I can't go with a wolf; I need a wolf in sheep clothing, a predator the others won't expect. Al-Sanya can take care of your disguise, make you almost completely unrecognizable with make-up, change your hair color for this month, and find you a dress that looks fancy, but allows you to hide a full suit of equipment underneath, as well as conceal your exact body shape. Then, Cora the Mercenary is known to be outgoing and quick to speak; if you simply keep quiet and put on a sheepish face, people are going to forget you are even there." Auth sipped his wine. "Which makes this perfect, as nobody will suspect you of being the wolf in disguise."

Auth noted in the corner of his vision how the low noble that was talking to Cora earlier collapsed as if dead drunk. He smirked. Exotic Vine does its job fancy and quick. More grins and chuckles were seen and heard at the neighboring tables, as the guy was being escorted (well, carried) out of the enterprise in the meantime.
Anyhow, back to the monumental task at hand.

"As for your being able to look pretty. Look, Cora, you only have to stand there and not say anything. You look pretty by yourself, you know?" This was, surprisingly, true. As long as she didn't put on a fierce face, she would easily look pretty. "All you need to do is keep yourself from doing anything other than standing around until the moment when you need to sneak in. Anyone can do that, especially someone with the level of self-control your multiple personalities trained on you."

He leaned back on his chair, closing his eyes for a split second.

"Come on, Cora. I need you to do this, be it for the sake of money or friendship, I don't care what your reason is. But, please don't let me down."

Cora sighed at Auth's monologue. Being a woman was really the only option, eh? What an unpleasant surprise.
She took a deep breath only to sigh again.

"Alright. I am in.", her voice sounded defeated, "I am not sure if I can look pretty though. I never trained to look like I am brain dead either. I am not sure if I can be one of your...", she waved her hand around, "play toys. I suppose. I don't get played with, I play with people. And putting on a mask like that might backfire. Just warning you."

Cora was quite happy about her being allowed to wear armour or...well other clothing underneath. Atleast that was a bonus! Her being naked under that dress...she would have died midway through the party.
She did not care much as the noble from before collapsed, she was pretty certain she would not lose one of her clients right now. Pretty certain. Not fully but...well she hoped she would not. It would be unfortunate.

Cora sighed once again, "Fine. Alright. What did I agree to just now. Let me forget this.", her voice changed midway through to Vex's and he quickly finished the last tortellini that were still on their plate.
His limbs started feeling numb, he lifted an arm up only for it to fall down towards the side of the body.
"Uhhhhh!", he said happily, "I like...this...", he managed to say before they quickly started falling down to the side furhter away from Auth.
In a desperate attempt to hold onto the table Nec just grabbed the plate, which in turn landed on their face before it fell onto the floor.

Mhhh. So much butter on our face. We should come here more often.
