A Cheers to living

Post by Bark295 on 12/6/2018, 19:10

The sun already 3/4 across the sky signified the end of the training hours and the start of down time hours for the survey corps goers who after a long hard day of training decided to go to Stohess for a few drinks after hitting the showers. where not everyone was so interested in joining the group decided to drag a few extra comrades along to make it seem less lonely. Among the few unfortunate souls who were selected West was snatched after getting dress, her hair was still matted and soaking wet. Despite her better judgment she caved in after their persistent begging. She didn't really want to go but some one had to drag the drunk soldiers back at the end of the night. The group of 10 headed down into the district ready for the night in the tavern. West temporarily broke of from the group saying she wanted to check something out then she would meet them at the tavern. Turning the corner she headed down the long streets that she's been to plenty of times to visit her younger siblings where they stayed at the home of a family friend who watches over them in the absence of their mother. West just wanted to say a quick hello then rejoin the group before they came looking for her. After her quick visit she finally reached the tavern and upon opening the door she was greeted with a sight of a few of her comrades already drunk while the others had waters, at least it saved her from having to carry a bunch of them back to the HQ. when she was offered a drink she politely turned it down: West has drank before but she's not a big fan of it. She leaned her back against the wall watching the patrons come and go as well as her comrades engaged in drunk laughter. It reminded her of the times she went with her father to the tavern when him and his comrades did the same. West quickly shrugged off the thought then went back to simply scanning her environment.

After a day of intense training,Renay walked around the streets of Stohess. He had only been here once and that was during a trip he had to go to with his parents, who were bakers. The place remained the same as it was when he was still a kid and he liked that. He felt comfortable due to that.

After some minutes of walking, he headed to the tavern and walked in. He was wearing the Survey Corps Jacket with the Wings of Freedom. He didnt have his 3DMG with him since he thought it was pointless. Beneath the jacket, he wore a white button-up tshirt and also black pants. He looked around the tavern as soon as he walked in, checking if any of his comrades were there as well. He was invited to join them for a drink and he accepted, telling them he will come a bit later than them which of course it happened.

He looked at their faces, they smelled alcohol too. "Pfft..Drunkards.." He thought to himself as the others in the room continued the drinks. But there was one of them he hadnt met yet, a girl in particular, which was leaning against the wall. He walked towards them, with a small smile and greeted everyone, then he took a seat next to the girl he didnt know.

He observed her, her appearance, her stature, her expression "Yeah definately havent met" He thought to himself once more. After some minutes of thinking he finally talked as the others were drinking "Hello there. Never met before have we?" He said with a small smile on his face and scratched the back of his head.

He found the courage to socialize which he didnt get the chance to fully do while training. While he had seen her before around the Survey Corps Headquarters, he never actually met her, or talked with her so he found this an excellent chance. "My name is Renay Fox. Im pleased to meet you" He finally said, extending his hand out for a handshake.

After what felt like forever since she had gotten there she began weighing her options: if she was quiet enough she could sneak out when no one was looking... nah someone would say something she was there for so long already, maybe she could fake being sick... well with the smell of alcohol in the air she wouldn't have to fake it. It was no use she was going to be stuck there for a while after a while things still failed to quiet down with her comrades; they were all still drunk and chatty with one another. West still hung up against the wall turned her eyes towards the door at the sound of an entering patron: it was another survey corps soldier, dressed in uniform warranting the drunk others to cheer at their fellow soldier walking in. She was surprised to see someone in full uniform, it was professional of them to do so, she didn't even have time to grab her jacket leaving her with only the collared shirt the trousers and her boots. He wasn't to familiar to her so she didn't have much to say looking at her watch she noticed the group had almost been there an hour and a half. "How much can a person seriously drink?" She muttered under her breath. Relaxing a bit she watched as the new soldier interacted with the others, they must all know each other. She knew a few people in the group but the rest were a bit foggy to her.
West was deep in thought until awoken by the sound of approaching footsteps in her direction her head shot up to see the new soldier was next to her. "..." she was quiet for a split moment, he didn't look like he had been drinking yet so she at least didn't have to worry about having a drunk conversation. Giving a small chuckle West responded "No, I don't think that we have" she straightened up removing her back from the wall. Looking past him for a moment she say some of her comrades sitting at the bar were looking in her direction trying to snoop in on the conversation. "Probably should pay more attention to my comrades though then I could have met you sooner" she gave a slight smile. She socialized with some people but others seemed intimidated by her luckily he wasn't the same as them. West listened to his introduction "pleasure to meet you Renay, I'm West Valen" she returned his handshake with one of her own. After she released his hand one of the soldiers sitting at the bar hobbled over to them with a chuckle, his breath thick with alcohol spoke out to Renay "better be careful mate *hic* West-y her has a pretty bad bite if ye rub 'er wrong *hic*" West rolled her eyes and directed the soldier back to the bar.

As West shook his hand in a handshake and introduced herself,he smiled a bit. He didnt have many friends but he was glad he was making more. He then looked over to the drunked comrades, and shook his head "They reek of Alcohol. Dont worry,im not a drinker" He said with a light chuckle.

He liked the company so far, thinking back to the old days, where he was with his friends and playing, pretending to be a soldier of the corps. He didnt enjoy his time like that since then. As the drunk comrades said something about bites and other stuff, he just facepalmed "This is what we get for going out with drunkards huh?" He said and ordered a small meal "Anything you would like to order? I'll pay for it" He said with a small smile as he got his jacket off since nobody else wore it.

"Ah,a bit of time without the uniform" He nodded to himself and left the jacket next to him. "Tell me about you West. I'll tell you about me aswell" He stretched a bit and got out a pocket watch from his pocket, checking the time, then he put it back. He enjoyed the warmth of the Tavern, it seemed good to him and also a bit nostalgic "Good old days huh?" He thought to himself. Then he took a look around the place again.

West gave a chuckle "I'm glad you're not a heavy drinker the smell of it on someone makes me nauseous pretty quickly" she recalled the pungent smell of booz on a street fighter she met, at least here her comrades weren't starting fights and betting on one another. "Im also not fond of having drunk conversations people seem to spit more when they've had to many drinks" she laughed a bit. The unfortunate thing about the drunk soldier's comment was that there had been some truth to it, she was by no means an overly violent person but she could go overboard at times, but never intentionally. West relaxed a bit seeing that Renay didn't look into the soldier's comment so much "right..." pausing for a moment she lightly shook her head at the offer for food "thanks for the offer but I'm not really hungry" she wasn't low on funds especially after she acquired the money from a street fight she didn't want to be in. "It's always good to get out of the uniform every once and awhile, i didn't have time to grab mine before the others snatched me to come to the tavern." West raised a brow when he asked about about her, thinking for a moment she finally figured out the right thing to say "I'm a 3rd generation soldier from Shiganshina and thats pretty much the gist of it, ill save you the long version for another time" she honestly didn't want to discuss her entire past then and there. West leaned back against the wall "Well a deals a deal now its your turn to say your story"

As she said she was glad he wasnt a heavy drinker, he nodded "Indeed. I rarely drink and when i do, i do not overdo it." Which was true. His meal arrived, being a steak along with some bread and a baked potato. He payed the waiter for the food and smiled a bit.

When West told him that she didnt like having drunk conversations he chuckled "I know right? I find it pointless to even talk to them like that. They also reek of Alcohol which makes it even worse." He ate a piece of bread afterwards and nodded to himself. He last ate in the morning, hours ago and a good meal always brings energy to someone.

Then West denied his offer for buying her food. He nodded, because he understood. She didnt seem really hungry to him but why not ask to buy her some? A good gesture is always good. When she mentioned that they snatched her, he sighed "Typical, happened to me last time they wanted to go out." He said as he shooked his head. "Indeed, getting out of the uniform sometimes is refreshing." And he agreed, afterall he wore it since he started training this morning.

When she mentioned from where she was, Shiganshina in fact, he felt bad. He didnt know that she was from there and he didnt want to make her sad by reminding her of painfull memories. When it was his turn to tell, he started talking "I am from Trost District. My parents are both bakers and i joined the training corps at 15. I graduated 1 month ago, at the 6th place out of 10 and i joined the Survey corps. I was going for the Military police Brigade, then i suddenly changed my mind." He said with a small smile. He hoped that would make her feel better, he felt sad for reminding her of Shiganshina.

Scratching her head West sighed “you’d be surprised how many heavy drinkers are around the military these days, always have to make sure your sober before going beyond those walls otherwise your signing your death certificate before you leave.” It didn’t bother her that people drank what bothered her is how easy it is for them to make the wrong choice. She shrugged her shoulder “for those who can stand the stench kudos, guess some people find a way to manage” it wasn’t the first time she was at the bar with fellow soldiers nor was it going to be the first time she had to drag the drunken soldiers back to HQ. She started to wonder why she even bothered leaving HQ when they were going to just go drinking the whole time. “well I guess it teaches us to listen to them” she shrugged off the thought. “they say it’s to just help relieve everyone’s nerves but I’m pretty sure they just want the excuse to go and not drink alone.” the uniform helped her remember why she was there in the first place and make her feel closer to the man who put her on the soldier’s path from the beginning, but even without it, it reminded her that at the end of the day she was still human and so was every other soldier “people get to see that soldiers are just everyday people just with a different set of clothing.” the soldiers were fighting for the everyday people, the lived for them, they died for them, and even with the fallen district she was from she never lost hope that it could be reclaimed. And if she lost hope then who would hope for humanity’s survival? She listened to Renay’s past, Trost was a district that she wasn’t too familiar with, she’s been there before but not for very long. “congratulations on graduating it’s not easy to survive all the way till the end, many people give up long before then” she paused hearing that he almost went into the Military Police, she knew that many called them cowards and they take the easy way out “well I’m glad you decided to join the corps instead, I was raised to respect the Military Police but many don’t think to highly of them” she laughed. Even her father let out a joke here and there about the unicorns, but it was always in good fun. “I prefer to make a difference for everyone rather than the inner most district, that’s one of the reasons I chose to be in the corps rather than Military Police”

As he was eating and West mentioned that many in the military were drinkers, he nodded "Indeed, there are a lot of people who overdo it with drinking in the military." Then he drank some water from a cup. After she mentioned that being drunk outside the walls guarentees you death, he nodded again "I know right? It is a bad habit and i hope it doesnt even happen outside the walls."

"Well maybe it teaches us that or they maybe want us to get a drink too" He said with a light chuckle "Although thats out of the question. Anyway, seems like we will have to drag them back" He chuckled again and shook his head as he looked at the drunkards.

After she talked about them being ordinary people, he looked over to his jacket, the emblem of the wings of freedom and thought. She was right, even if they risked their lives for the advancement of normal folk, they were like them aswell. They were people. "I agree with you, times like these remind me that im also considered a civilian, not only a soldier."

After she joked about the Unicorns and talked about graduation, he chuckled lightly "Yeah it was hard. A lot of my friends left because they lacked either will or strength. Others couldnt even stay away from family." He said shaking his head. "And you are right, it is better to contribute to everyone than to yourself. I was going to join the Mps because of the easy life, the safe life. But then i thought that it would make me a coward. I also thought about the men dying for our advancements, for progress. And i admired them, so i joined to continue for them, to avenge them even, that and also some pals of mine joined in, reminding me of what i wanted to be when i was younger." He said looking at his remaining steak. "Im really impressed by the way. I dont usually meet interesting people but you are an exception to that. Im glad we are talking right now, i needed that" He smiled lightly and then looked over to the ceiling.

Re: A Cheers to living

West luckily never saw a corps drunk beyond the walls but she's seen drunken Garrison with in the walls while on duty, when she was younger she remembered sitting by the gate with the Garrison guards while they drank played cards and she waited for her dad to get back from his missions. They all had stories to tell regarding their past while they were training to join the military in the first place.

Inserting her thoughts back into the conversation she addressed his concern regarding drunk soldiers trying to fight Titans outside the walls "Im sure if their captains noticed they would refuse to let them even take part in a mission if they suspected they were the slightest bit impaired" West ran a few fingers through her hair then huffed "well they are going to the wrong people even if I had the slightest interest in drinking i would be smart enough to know that someone has to be conscious enough to make sure no one gets hurt" she looked over at the bar, one of the soldiers was already passed out from overdoing it "yah know you're not wrong about that, hope your in the mood to help carry them back" she gave a laugh even though she was going to end up carrying one of the drunks back to HQ.

even if all a soldier was is a civilian dressed in a fancy uniform and wearing social gear they were still dawning the garments that people believe they need to put their faith in. Hearing about how he had to end up leaving friends behind due to the fact they weren't able to make the cut her her eyes lowered a bit "it never is easy watching them leave... unfortunately all you can do is carry on and make it there yourself, being a soldier is filled with decisions that affect everyone's life. West had heard plenty of reasons why people chose the military branch they did but she seldom ever heard that someone was going for MP then changed their mind for the idea of joining the survey corps "you made the decision that not everyone dose... the decision to go beyond the wall and risk being eaten by the cruel heartless monsters that scrounge around for a meal" she paused looking him directly in the eye "people like you let me know that I'm not the only one whose truly invested in this"

scratching the back of her head she nodded in agreement "yah know what your pretty interesting yourself I'm glad you came along so I didn't die of boredom from being in a bar while everyone else got drunk"

Renay remembered while still living in Trost,he too had seen Drunk Garrison members. These were the peacefull days to him. They told him stories, they shared their minimal experiences. Some of them were friends to his family. As West talked about the drunkards being noticed outside the walls he chuckled "It would be really obvious that they would be drunk outside the walls." He nodded and looked over to them.He agreed with what she said about being concious and all,as he nodded again.

As she mentioned about them carrying them back to HQ,he laughed a bit too "Yeah, seems like we will carry them back." He said as he drank some more of his water from his cup. "Indeed,it isnt easy to see them leave. But i agree, we soldiers always do the hard decisions. And for the greater good aswell" He agreed with what she was talking about. During training,he had lost a lot of good friends due to them not being suited for the job but he carried on,to show his strength,to make people believe in him. "Well,i couldnt stand just sitting in the inner district and becoming like the drunkards of the garrison who were just sitting and playing cards when Wall Maria fell..That would be the worst,i would be considered a coward which i dont want to happen.."

As she said that people like him make her believe in the cause more,he smiled a bit "Well yeah. It is all for the good of Humanity.. And also our duty. If it werent for the survey corps,we would know nothing about the titans" He said continuing to smile. He then scratched his head as she called him interesting "Well im glad i dont just wait for them to finish drinking and return home. It would be boring otherwise." And of course it would be, Renay always enjoyed conversations but conversations that were worth it,and serious ones at that.

Looking at the time West was surprised about how long she was there, given if Renay hadn’t shown up she would have left hours ago. The bar was one of her least favorite places to be but having a friendly sober face around made it pretty tolerable for the soldier. “I personally believe that a soldier should have enough common sense to know how their actions could hold consequences…” she paused thinking about how many mistakes she’s seen in the military due to rash decision “… but I’ve been proven wrong before” mistakes are simply part of human nature but the slightest mistake is the difference between life and death on the field “a piece of advice if you will… trust who you want but know at the end of the day they are still human” she always did her best to trust the people around her while at the same time setting up her own plan for if something went wrong. “we may be the ones who make those split-second decisions, but decisions are only that… decisions they mean nothing without an action to back it up” at the end of the day she preferred action to talk anyway.
West took his words into consideration regarding his reasoning for joining the corps vs. Garrison or Military Police “even if the Garrison was in full attention there was no way to prevent that from happening… the wall was destroyed and the titans took advantage… no one was ready, no one was prepared, and no one could have predicted it” she didn’t like discussing Wall Maria she didn’t like how everyone tried to blame the soldiers present for not being able to stop the inevitable. “a coward is one who refuses to act out of fear and blindly runs away without considering others, believe me you are no coward” West adjusted her collar before running a few fingers through her hair. “I plan on remaining a soldier until either death or old age stops me just as my grandfather and father had done before, hopefully I can help humanity survive with my time”
the sound of thud caught her attention: one of the soldiers had dropped a beer mug before their face hit the bar counter “looks like we don’t have to wait anymore, time to take them back to HQ and hopefully their hangover teaches them not to overdo it anymore… I’ll grab Herrickson” she pushed herself off the wall approaching the soldier who was passed out. She grabbed one of his arms and pulled him over her shoulder adjusting him so he wouldn’t fall off “it was pleasant chatting with you Renay I hope we get the chance to do it again” she nodded her head before heading out the door

Renay was looking at the time aswell,it had been hours since he came into the bar. That was fine to him due to the fact that he had nice company to hang out with.If he were to be alone,he would just leave the second he came in. "I will agree with you there.Everything we do has consequences" He said with a nod and drank some water from his cup.

"Well,it is what it is"He responded after she said that she was proved wrong before.Mistake indeed was part of the human nature. Everyone makes mistakes, even the best of us. But out of the walls, mistakes can be fatal. A wrong tactic could destroy the entire regiment,or so he thought anyway.

As she advised him to trust whoever he wants and that everyone's a human he nodded "I know. If you dont have the will to act, then the decision making is pointless. If you cant carry out your own decisions well..You shouldnt make decisions to begin with." And he really thought of that,he believed that the ones that make decisions, even the hard ones, must understand the weak, not only the strong and should decide anything for the benefit of everyone, not the few.

"Indeed, nobody was prepared. We lived 100 years in peace, then the bad day came. Not their fault but im sure that we can make a difference and reclaim our lands. There is always hope."He said and wanted to believe that.He wanted to reclaim the lands,to go out of the walls. The titans were just limiting humanity's freedom and he wanted to be free, not in a cage.

About the soldier thing,he thought that he could do it untill he was old aswell,he wanted to believe that he wont die out there, that he never will. But never say never. He held the thought on the back of his head but he nodded "I agree with you, untill death takes me or of old age,i dont care.I just want to prove that there is still hope for us."

Then as she got up and dragged Herrickson he sighed. The conversation had ended, they had to leave "I take it we will meet again West.Be safe out there"He waved at her and then dragged the other one towards her, leaving 4 minutes after her.Outside,he picked up the drunk man on his back and walked away.
