The sky above the destroyed scout castle was dark and beautiful. Countless starts dotted the sky, their beauty untouched and unsoiled by titan and human alike. Constellations loomed above, interpreted and reinterpreted by the watchers over many millennia. A few clouds traveled lazily above, drifting far away from the grassy hills and trees. They didn't care whether the titans or the humans would win in this timeless struggle. They just kept drifting along with the wind. How lucky for them.
And the moon. The moon! How brightly it shone, in its glorious round beauty. It was a full moon, looming far overhead. So pale, so mysterious, so close and yet so out of reach.
The sky was beautiful.
However, slowly, a dark disturbance spread across it. Smoke. A small pillar of smoke rose upwards through the sky, littering the otherwise peaceful night air.
And where was this smoke coming from?
Far below, right beside the ruins, a campfire was merrily cackling. Its warmth embraced Alan Katlewande as he huddled near it, coat tight around his body and a biscuit in hand. He slowly watched as the teakettle he placed over the fire started letting out steam. The young Military Police captain smiled. It had been a weary journey, but he was rather comfortable now.
However, he also knew he shouldn't be feeling comfortable. He should be feeling tense. Very tense. And he was, but he was just trying to subside it.

Alan was out here in order to meet with Severin Wildner, the titan shifter turned garrison soldier turned rogue terrorist. The Red Titan. The most dangerous man in recent history of humanity... and Alan's primary target for the last year.
Or so he had been. From the beginning, Alan had doubts about Severin. Every time he thought he understood him, his actions surprised him again and made him rethink who this enigmatic individual was.
Alan had enough. Enough of doubt. Enough of murder. Enough of secrets. The groomed man gave Alan an offer, and he accepted.
The instructions were very specific - leave a red rose in a specific jar in a specific restaurant in Karanes, then hide a note with his Severin's initials and his own in a different tavern altogether. Alan wondered if this level of secrecy was always the way Severin had worked, and not just with him. It explained how he continued to allude the Military Police for so long.
From there, he had to wait 3 days before heading to the ruins of the old scout base, the fort which Severin himself destroyed only a few years back, enraged in his titan form. Weeds and vines were already starting to cover the ruins, as if they have been there all along, as if they were supposed to be laying in disarray on the ground.
Alan looked above, at the moon soaring above, motionless. He was aware that he could die tonight, that Severin could kill him without a single person ever knowing. Of course he'd told no one of his intentions - if anybody knew he had information about Severin he hid from the Military, he'd probably be executed on grounds of working with the enemy.

And that was the thing, really. Alan wasn't so certain that Severin was the enemy. Even if he could transform into a giant, red titan. Even if he has killed dozens before him. Alan had been spared enough times by the bane of humanity to know that something was up, that there was more to the story than he had known. And he had to know.
And so, he waited. Waited to know if he was going to live or die, waited to know if he had been right or wrong in his pursuit.
The fire crackled.

Severin had been waiting for what seemed like an eternity in that damnable castle, pacing away the hours as he awaited Alan's inevitable arrival to the site - he was a smart man, that one. Quick both on his feet and with his wits. Severin, of course, knew that Alan would reply; the young man's insatiable curiosity was the easiest flaw of his to exploit. Alan would no doubt have an endless list of questions and inquiries for him, and Severin would have to answer all of them. That was what he dreaded the most, Severin nodded to himself. All the questions. All the digging. All the memories he'd have to relive in order to satisfy the policeman's curiosity. But it had to be done, for Severin couldn't keep Alan in the dark forever and keep him as an ally. Gazing out at the wilderness, the Red Titan stared into the dusk sky and tried to lose himself in his thoughts, attempting to gather all of the relevant information he'd need to cough up. Some hours later, Severin awoke from his daze and noticed that night had fallen. How quaint. Rubbing his eyes, Severin caught notice of a trail of smoke billowing upwards outside the fortress. That must be Alan, Severin mused as he strolled over to a half-destroyed window and jutted his head out to see if he was right...

He was.

Severin nodded a few times and returned to the interior of the castle, making his way to the ground floor in a brisk fashion. Emerging from behind two rotting oak doors underneath a decrepit stone arch, Severin announced his presence to the policeman and walked out to the campfire.

Like old messengers, wooden doors creaked. Alan Katlewande immediately looked up, his nervousness peaking. His hand reached for his dagger, but he stopped himself mid-way. Out of the shadows of the dark ruins, from underneath the stone arch, emerged a dark-haired young man, his hair combed back in a neat fashion.
So he did come, Alan pondered. Despite the fact Alan didn't expect Severin to lie to him about his means of communication, seeing him in person made everything feel that much more real.
Alan rose abruptly from the log he was sitting upon, the firesmoke slightly stinging his eyes. He forced himself to smile politely. There was no room for mistakes, no second chance for this interaction.
"It's good to see you saw the invitation I sent you." he finally said, eyes gleaming behind their glass frame as Severin Wildner approached. The Policeman gestured with his hand towards another horizontal log by the fireplace, clearly put there for the intention of making the campfire more hospitable for the shifter.
"I hope you like tea." the captain spoke quietly as he sat back down and gently poked the steaming kettle with a stick, only removing his eyes briefly from the rogue shifter. He still found it hard to conceal his awe from the man before him.

Alan folded his hands beneath his head, sighing. He looked up at Severin.
"I'd tell you that I came here alone, that I told nobody of my coming here nor my intentions, and that I mean you no harm, but in all honesty, does that even matter to someone like you?" his eyes squinted "Does that even make a difference for someone with your abilities? You've proven time and again that you can overwhelm even the most elite of forces. What risk can I truly pose you?"
Alan shook his head "My apologies. That's beside the point."
Alan fiddled with his hands. He was clearly nervous, and for very good reason. Each word to come out of his mouth could decide his fate, and far more importantly, the fate of humanity.
"You surely understand that all I'm doing now is highly illegal. I'm risking my job and my life by meeting you here. So, do you have any idea as to why I came all this way to meet you? What I wanted to talk to you about?" Alan's face, for once, gave nothing away of his thoughts, save for a small, polite smile.
This was it. Time to put the pieces into place.

Severin’s eyes scanned the officer as he spoke, his crimson gaze trailing up and down the young man. Katlewande was the one to break the silence, and Severin responded in kind ; a faint overtone of comeraderie seeping into his words.
“Of course I saw your invitation, Alan. I see everything - especially when it comes to you.”Alan was very obviously nervous - and rightfully so. It wasn’t very often that one had midnight meetings with men whose names brought entire military branches to a halt. Severin eyed the log Alan had laid out for him, and took the Policeman’s invitation to sit down by the crackling fire. Adjusting his position on the dead wood, Severin listened to his ever-so-humble champion ask if he liked tea. Chuckling, Severin rubbed his hands together and held them out towards the fire.
“I do love myself a good cup of tea, Alan. Warms the bones, especially on a night like this.” Severin craned his neck upwards, looking towards the ascending ruins of the old Scout Headquarters and the night sky.
“There’s no need to apologize, Alan.” Severin spoke to the Policeman with a familiarity of voice that a close friend or relative might use, despite the two of them spending precious little time together.
“Honestly, I’m not as invincible or unkillable as you might think. I’m no deity. I know you’ve read all the reports, and that you know all about every encounter I’ve had that those greenback paper pushers have written down. But I also know that you’re an extremely intelligent man, and you’ve probably been piecing together some weakness of mine to exploit - some critical error in my being that you could use to bring me down in moments. You probably pose as much of a risk to me as I do to you, Alan, despite what you may believe.” Severin ran a hand through his hair and stared at Alan, the fire’s glow filling up Severin’s intense gaze with an unsettling glow.
“I know you’re nervous, Alan. But your staring is make me a bit uncomfortable, so could you stop? I’m not a lab rat for you to dissect.” Severin’s gaze fell to Alan’s lips as the Policeman put a herculean amount of effort into choosing his words, aiming to not anger the shifter.
“I know what you’re doing out here, Alan.” Severerin proclaimed, placing a hand on his knee. “You’re here for answers. To sate that unquenchable curiosity you have.” With the niceties and formalities out of the way, Severin thought, the only thing stopping Alan from raiding the dark dungeons of his memories was Alan himself. “So, greenback,” Severin joked as he leaned back on the log.
“What’s your first question?”
