A Little Promise Empty A Little Promise

Post by Alan Katlewande 14/7/2017, 01:42

Nearly... There... Just a few... More...
Alan's vision shook violently as he ran on the dirt path right outside town. The ground beneath him returned merciless blows with each step he took. Alan looked up at the sky, so blue and deep... So deep...
Alan stumbled and fell onto his face.
The young captain rolled over and lay motionless, except for his chest which was rising and falling rapidly. He breathed hard coughed up whatever dust entered his lungs. Despite hurting all over and feeling like a baked potato, his mind was clear as always.

7 kilometers. Barely. Better than average by 2.6, worse than previous run by 1.3. Running ability appears to be improving, overall, but not quickly enough.
Alan rolled over and pulled out a small metallic flask. He downed the water inside like a savage animal, pausing for breaths.
Power training going better. Heavier payload carried each time. Muscles are starting to get used to it. Nearly.
The unicorn let the last few drops roll down into his mouth, then returned to look at the sky, while laying in the middle of the road and breathing heavily.

Alan was training hard - perhaps harder than ever. He was more than fit enough for the Military Police lifestyle, but his own lifestyle was slightly more demanding than that. If he ever intended to join the Scouts under the persona of the Grayblade, he would need to be much tougher, much quicker.
Alan sighed. He was making progress, but not nearly fast enough. He still lacked the proper level of skill needed in most fields - horseback riding, 3DMG mobility, titan-fighting, running fast or running far, carrying heavy equipment for prolonged periods of time, human-to-human combat, escapability and deceit. The only skill he got somewhat good at was acting - he could now change a lot of his characteristics at will to a relatively convincing level. If he needed to, he may have the ability to trick people into thinking he is something that he's not.
Maybe. For now, he couldn't hide the fact that he was bloody worn out.

A Little Promise Empty Re: A Little Promise

Post by Mitsuo Shimura 14/7/2017, 17:23

Mitsuo stretched as he walked, he found it peaceful to listen to the soft noise of his footsteps on the dirt path.

He paused stretching when he noticed a body sprawled out on the floor.
He hurriedly jogged over but as he drew closer he noticed the body inhaling and exhaling so he slowed back into walking.

As he examined the body, Mitsuo realized that he recognized the frame.

Mitsuo got close enough to cast his shadow over the face of his fallen friend.

"You know... there are better places to sleep than a dusty floor," he smirked, "like your bedroom."

Mitsuo closed his eyes and slowly shook his head.
As he returned his gaze on Alan he raised an eyebrow, "what are you doing out here anyway? Trying to get a tan?"

The young Shimura chuckled to himself at his own remark, "some people can't be helped, eh?"
He spoke with a cheerful tone.

"Come on, get up," he extended his hand to help the Unicorn get back onto his feet.

A Little Promise Empty Re: A Little Promise

Post by Alan Katlewande 14/7/2017, 22:42

Alan was looking at the clouds. There was a lot of information you could gather by doing so, surprisingly.
Wind appears to be blowing... westward he inspected, his breath slowing down slightly The clouds appear to be travelling a bit quicker than usual. Considering the lack of stormy weather on the horizon, I should be clear for... 5 more hours. More than I need. Good.
The shaking of the ground caught Alan's attention. This, along with the growing sound of the dirtpath being tread, made the captain come to the conclusion he was being approached.
True enough, a shadow soon emerged and covered Alan's face. A welcomed occurence. Along with it, a voice spoke.
"You know... there are better places to sleep than a dusty floor," it said, "like your bedroom."
Mitsuo Shimura Alan noted as he recognized the voice.A delightful surprise.
When the young mechanic made a joke about him trying to get a tan, Alan couldn't help but chuckle a little bit. He must've really looked silly, laying in the middle of the dirt path like that.
Alan grabbed Mitsuo's hand and raised himself up, slowly. He was still aching from the run, but he felt a bit better now than before.
"Hey, Mitsuo." he managed, between breaths "Long time no see."

"You're looking fine," said Alan, as he walked alongside Mitsuo "I mean, at least a lot better than what I must be looking like now. How are things going? Still working on those wacky projects of yours?"

Alan listened to Mitsuo, and in the meantime noticed the little details - how his hair was slightly longer, his body a bit leaner than before. It seems the scout was working as hard as ever.

"Oh, that reminds me-" Alan said, interrupting his poor friend "Y-you must've heard about the new mission, right? They're sending out scouts and MPs on an operation of some sort soon. You wouldn't happen to know anything about it, right?"
Alan waited patiently for his friend's response. Truth was, he knew more than he was letting on. Alan already knew details concerning the mission, and was in fact going to head the Military Police dispatch, by Dok's personal request. He wanted to see what Mitsuo has been told, try to connect the pieces of this incomplete puzzle.
Nile Doc played the game of secrecy with Alan, a game he both hated and accepted. He would've done the same.

Mitsuo smiled at Alan.

"Still working on those wacky projects of yours?"

Mitsuo chuckled at the question and scratched his head, "Yep! I've gotten a few more requested too! Especially an important one."

Mitsuo then started small talk of the project, "Auth requested it actually. Clever idea too! Making a metal structure that should be able to protect people from Titans. Just in case another breach happens."

'Somewhat true,' Mitsuo thought, 'however it's still a lie... It's not a preparation for another breach.'

Mitsuo hated lying... especially to his friends. He struggle to stop this expressing on his face but he managed.

"Y-you must've heard about the new mission, right? They're sending out scouts and MPs on an operation of some sort soon. You wouldn't happen to know anything about it, right?"

His friend dragged him out of his thoughts.
Mitsuo smiled again, "Oh yeah! All I got told was some sort of search and rescue mission and that when the convoy reaches its destination, all scouts must take orders from the MP when taking action."

Mitsuo showed an expression of sudden realization, "you've heard of the mission too? So that means you're going right!? What do you know about it?"

Mitsuo chuckled, excitement in his eyes.
So there was a chance he was going to share a mission with Alan.
'That thought is definitely interesting,' the words ran through the young Shimura's mind, 'interesting and fun.'

A Little Promise Empty Re: A Little Promise

Post by Alan Katlewande 19/7/2017, 12:46

Alan continued pacing by Mitsuo, listening intently to him. His mind was piecing together different puzzles continously - right now, it was deducting things regarding the upcoming mission and analyzing Mitsuo's behavior.
When Mitsuo asked Alan what he knew, he didn't hesitate to answer. He already knew it before asking his own question.
"Yes," Alan smiled gently, a twinkle in his eye "I am going to be a part of the mission. Hope I won't get in the way too much."

Suddenly, Alan felt a bit uncomfortable with his rank, but he figured there was no use hiding this information from Mitsuo.
"As it happens, I was recently promoted to the rank of captain and given a squad of my own. I will be heading the Military Police dispatch for this mission."
Alan couldn't help but blush a bit. He tried saying this in the most non-showoffish way he could, but he doubted it sounded like anything but prideful boasts.
"As for what I know?" Alan paused for a brief moment "...Nothing more than you, really. Absolutely being kept in the dark about this operation."
Alan kept walking on, calmly. On the one hand, he didn't like lying to people, especially friends, but on the other hand it didn't particularly bother him either. As long as he knew he was doing it for a just reason, Alan found it far easier to do immoral things.
Once again, he noted to himself just how dangerous that sort of thing is, for a man to decide what is right and what is wrong by himself and control people's lives by following these guidelines.

"I can't say I am particularly looking forward to this mission," Alan continued, smiling sadly "My last encounter with a titan had not ended very well, as you may remember."
"Still, I'll get to see some familiar faces, probably. Auth? You? People from my old trainee corp?"
Safer popped up in his mind. The fresh scout with the scary look in his eye. Despite being a bit creepy, his skill at taking down titans (Or at least titan dummies, as far as Alan has seen) is uncanny. Will he be joining them as well?
"Anyway, as you can see, I've been training hard... For the upcoming mission. Still, I can't help but feel I won't be good enough..." Alan looked off to the side. How much did Mitsuo know, about Alan's quest for justice? Does he suspect that Alan is training not for the mission, but for becoming the Grayblade? Can he see through his lies?
Alan looked at Mitsuo with a hint of sadness in his eyes.

Mitsuo patted Alan on the back, "You're a captain!? Awesome, dude! Congrats!"

Now in a cheery mood, Mitsuo wasn't concerned with the possible outcomes of the mission.

"I don't think you could get in the way that much, MPs are going to be kept safe no matter what, I'm sure."

Alan mentioned the party. Mitsuo's smile didn't drop, however his internal happiness did. That was not a pleasant time, indeed.
He subconsciously rubbed his right shoulder where the scar of where he got shot in the event was placed.

Mitsuo snapped back to reality, "oh, so you're training? That makes sense why you were on the floor earlier."

Mitsuo thought for a moment.
"I'm sure you'll be fine! In fact, training sounds like reasonable prep for the mission, do you mind if I join you?"

Alan took the compliment well. At least, he hoped he did. It was more like blush deeply to himself, refuse eye contact and hunch over as if he wanted to turn into a ball.
He'd call that progress. he did manage to blurt out a weak "Thank you".

When Mitsuo said that the MPs are going to be kept safe no matter what, Alan couldn't help but hold back his grim laughter. "You must not know the Military Police well enough if you assume that. My guess is the first half of them will try to run away during the mission, while the second half will be so frightened they wouldn't be able to follow the simplest orders. Those cowards were not meant for horse-riding, or titan-fighting, or anything of actual significance." Alan looked lost in thought for a moment. If this was how he thought of his branch, what must he think of his own work? Of his own purpose in the world?

The young captain stopped walking when Mitsuo asked if he could join his training. He looked at him with a surprised, amused smile somewhere between disbelief and a well-placed joke.
"Y-you're welcome to join me, if you'd like," Alan began, continuing to walk "But to be frank, I think it may be a bit too easy for you. I am nowhere near your capabilities, so I am afraid we won't be able to do much together. Still, I'd appreciate the company."
Alan glanced at the mechanic. What was going through his head? Were his motivations as simple as he let out? His life must be great, if he knows exactly what he wants to do, and he does it. Alan looked away, not wanting his friend to feel weird due to a prolonged stare.

Mitsuo laughed, "The MPs do things that some of us Scouts wouldn't be able to do! You guys need to give yourselves more credit!"

Mitsuo loosened his tie and unbuttoned his waist coat, "I'll keep in pace with you, don't worry."

The mechanic started stretching, "so, what are we doing? Jogging? Push ups? What?"

Mitsuo started doing more preparations while waiting for his friend. He started with jogging on the spot then fluently changed into lunges and then back into stretching only to repeat the process.

By the time Alan would respond, Mitsuo would have already built up a sweat.

A Little Promise Empty Re: A Little Promise

Post by Alan Katlewande 11/8/2017, 18:30

Alan couldn't help but laugh at the absurd situation. He felt a little closer to Mitsuo, who was willing to go to such lengths in order to help him train.
"Well..." Alan began, glaring at the open fields around them "Considering my legs are still aching from running, I think my stamina had enough for today. How about we give some push-ups a try?"
The young Military Police captain stared at his pumped-up friend with a smile. Despite being so detached, Mitsuo had a talent for cheering people up. Alan really appreciated that.

During the push-ups, Alan tried to keep his mind off the sprain and the weariness, and instead focus on other things. It was a bit difficult, however, because not only was Alan abnormally aware of his own situation, but his thinking speed meant that he could only go so long without completely losing touch with reality or run out of things to ponder. Right now, he was considering whether he should reveal his secrets intentions to Mitsuo or not. Sadly, Alan could not think of many benefits from the situation, but the possible dangers from such an act would be immense. Even if Mitsuo would not do so intentionally, it is possible for him in some way or another to reveal Alan's hidden identity to the wrong people. All it took was one person, and Alan would face serious accusations, and likely lose his position in the Military.
Alan gave way around the 20 push-up margin, breathing heavily as he lay on the ground. His face was red like a tomato, and sweat lined his forehead, making the hair stick to it.
It was going to be a long day.
