Orion Warthen Empty Orion Warthen

Post by Orion Warthen 8/6/2017, 20:53

Name: Orion Jacob Warthen

Age:17

Group: Survey Corps

Rank: Soldier

Appearance:
Orion is tall and slender, with a height of 6'4" and a weight of 165. He is notoriously bony due to his double joints and how his spine and ribs seems to push against his skin, though much less now with the now noticably developed muscle. Orion's eyes are a dark hazel, he is clean shaven and has dark brown hair. He also has a rather dark olive skin color.

Identity:
Orion is a Logician at his core, emotions are either tools or burdens most of the time. It's not that he hates them or anything, he understands they have purpose and still has them, however there are many times he finds them very annoying to have and see people have. Due to his almost indifference to emotion Orion relies on two things, intuition and sheer logic. Thus his immense focus on these things have made him seem cold and distant sometimes, but it also allows him to understand violent situations with incredible efficiency. Strategy, fighting, stealth, and physical predictions are his specialty. He thus took to the 3d mobility gear like a fish to water and started thinking of ways to attack titans in more creative ways then merely attacking from the back.

Interestingly, his scenario's are most efficient for killing individual humans and not titans. Although they are undoubtedly useful for doing so. What is he not good at? People. His social skills can often be lacking, he actually enjoys people but he has trouble with them. This has resulted in numerous situations where he ends up simply staying quiet, or speaking in a manner that either sounds cruel and almost robotic, or just straight up weird or creepy. His inability to properly fit in with humans is actually one of the main reasons he chose to go into the survey corps instead of military police or mercenary work as in both having good social skills can actually be an incredible advantage.

Then there is his attention to logic and order. He hates chaos and irrationality. This is another reason he chose to join the survey corps, if one could attack the cause of chaos before it even reached it's target then he would be able to return to a place that still had buildings standing and not a ton of broken and uneven streets. Because to him, order is calm, and calm helps him think, which he enjoys greatly.

Backstory:
Orion Warthen. Child genius, second child of a rich family of doctors on one side and merchants on the other, and the quiet kid who was always watching others fight, and occasionally joining in mock combat. His family expected much of him, they wanted him to get straight A's in school despite it being ahead of what he was supposed to be taking, they also wanted him to learn how to take up at least one of the family trades. Become a merchant or become a doctor. No doubt he would have excelled as a doctor, he was clever in matters of science and had virtually no response to blood or torn flesh if he was in the middle of trying to fix it or was the one causing it.

Unfortunately for his family, he hated studying for that, and hated what he considered would be a dull life. When he was just 9 he was already engaging in rather risky gymnastics using the buildings around as a way to practice. He wanted to be one of two things, a warrior, or a mercenary. Either he was going to fight titans or he was going to fight people. He strategized, he practiced, he tested his intellect and agility until he was one of the best untrained kids in his age group. When fighting people he used his double jointedness to escape holds and put them in rather unusual grabs as well, or straight up studied them until he could start predicting their moves or how to react at least. He wasn't so good with punches but he could sure use a staff if he could grab one. As for titans? Well he didn't know yet. He had ideas, attacking them from the inside, explosives, fire, utilizing spring powered boots instead of 3D maneuver gear, many ideas went down in failure before he even actually tested them, others remained present in his mind. But he knew two things, he had to practice his agility and his mind. If he could outmaneuver a titan with minimal use of 3D gear and still locate a way to kill them then he could make the most of his life should he ever run out of fuel, or face far to many titans. For this reason he continued to practice on buildings, flinging himself from building to building and using a rather light footed running that would let him turn much faster then a full out sprint. And for his mind he did was he always did, he studied, he practiced, he predicted, he learned. Despite not being likely to ever use it Orion put plenty of effort into his medical studies, using it instead to sharpen his mind rather then actually keep the stuff. He would also practice in any strategy game he could, or try to predict their outcomes at the very least. Some of it got difficult due to how long he put into it, but he thought it was worth it.

When he got old enough, and believed he had studied enough, he joined the Cadets. He had a disadvantage he'd forgotten, strength. He had put so much focus in intellect and agility he forgot how much strength was needed to actually slice into a titans neck. He also found it very difficult to build up strength but forced himself to push through anyway. He wasn't going to give up on something that he wanted to do and knew if he tried hard enough he'd become very good at it. Soon enough it would be time to employ what he'd learned so far, soon enough he could kill titans like he wanted to, enjoy the violence as disturbing as that might seem. Because some people are just odd that way, even in the face of death they enjoy fighting back. That's just the kind of person that Orion was.

Stats:

Strength: 6
Agility:7
Intellect: 15
The increase in points is due to:
A higher intellect due to education and effort
A high agility due to his double jointedness and focus on it as he grew up.
Above average strength due to height and how much physical activity he has as well as the training.
Extra: Orion utilizes a pair of "Boosters" which are pipes connected to  the heel and the sides of his boots, these pipes are connected to replaceable canisters on his lower legs that function the same way 3d mobility gear would without the cables. The disadvantage is that they aren't actually long lasting and not as much stability as they are attached to his legs not his torso. He only managed to make these and work with them because he had the money to due so thanks to his parents, who while they hoped he would carry on their profession didn't want him going into the military with standard equipment either. Due to a serious lack in stability, and lack of enough enhancement, cables were also attached to his waist in the same way mobility gear is. Of course it is still rather short range (the jump boost is to about 2,5 meters tops, assuming a running start), and works much more like a sort of "back up" replacement if he really needs them.

Face claim: Vincent Law from Ergo Proxy

So, now that I got around to this:

1. You do lack ~30-50 words on the identity part. That being said, it's well explained enough so I can overlook it. Up to you whether or not you want to make the little extra still needed, I won't demand it.

2. A short explanation on double joints would probably be appreciated. After googling it, I found out it's a real thing and not what it sounds like, and I'm sure other members would have the same opinion. It does not need to be anything too long, just a short mention of what the hell that is, for the sake of convenience. (it would go under appearance)

3. The backstory is great, really. I love the way of writing you have, and will definitely enjoy roleplaying with you later on.

4. Stat extras is approved, they make full sense and it's not a ridiculously high value for anything. Do expect increases in INT to come by slower alongside time, though (but that counts for anyone with a high stat, really. I'll more easily allow someone to fix up bad stats than to reach the limit. I mean, think about it: what's harder, becoming fit when you were weak, or becoming first Olympic place when you were second?)

5. The boosters:

a. If you want to keep them cable-less, and make them virtually spring-boots, we'll have to be harsh regarding their power. I've talked it with cornix, and their maximum boost would cap out at a 2,5 metre high jump (assuming a running start), though measured at the feet (as in, you'd be able to jump on a tree branch at that height and stand on it). That number will slowly increase alongside your agility, but will cap out fully at not that much more (around 3 to 3,5 metres are already more than just exaggerated).

The boots will certainly not allow you to fly, and won't be able to equal 3DMG in the terms of mobility. In other words, using them alone is risky at best, suicidal at worst, and should only be kept for situations where 3DMG really does not work. (and even then, won't help too much against a titan on flat ground).

b. You could give them a cable, and make them virtually boot-mounted short-ranged (~5metre) 3DMG. Only mentioning this because that's what I originally understood, and it would still be only for emergency situations and highly inefficient compared to 3DMG. They would come with a completely different set of acrobatics they'd allow (for example, shooting the wire at a wall and using it as a support for your feet, or speeding up your way into a titan's mouth while also assuring you won't fall down the throat), and it's up to you if you want to consider this alternative.

5. "Dislikes: Drinking Water" Me too Orion, me too. There are so many waaaaay better alternatives!

6. The fear of open dark areas made me think: Wouldn't a general fear of wide open areas appear in like every survey corp, given enough time? After all, it's the one place where you really can't fight back, so it'd make sense. It would add a whole new fun dimension the army, too, to have most survey corps people feel uneasy when in large spaces, titans or not.

Anyway, will wait until your reply to approve this, I want to make sure we both agree to everything. This also implies every point I made is up for negotiation (except 5. There's no negotiation with that one).

1. Ok thanks. I may put more effort into that if I can in that case, with only 30-50 words it shouldn't be an excessive difficulty.
2. I didn't even realize people hadn't heard of that. I just sort of assumed it was common enough. But I'll put more information into that for the sake of convenience then.
3. Thanks! I think I'll enjoy this roleplaying site.
4. Sounds good.
5. That's reasonable. Pretty sure if I tried to fly I'd fall even with good agility and a lot of gas. That's just not stable or powerful enough. I think adding cables like you said would be the best idea, which might need to work the same way the 3D gear works but on a much smaller scale. Basically it becomes a slight enhancement in agility/speed/reach.
5. Lol, yeah, almost anything is better then water that is actually drinkable.
6. I...didn't actually realize that. Yeah, that'd actually make a lot of sense. And it'd be interesting to have it played as a sort of response to traumatic experience, like in war.

I shall be altering my application in a short while if I can. Then move on to the extra's mentioned in the other thread to check those responses out.
